Asst. Prof. Kiljunen is a distinguished scientist known for her significant contributions to microbiology and molecular biology. Her research mainly covers bacteriophage therapy, phage-host interactions, and the genomic and proteomic characterisation of bacteriophages. She explores bacteriophages as a treatment option for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, focusing specifically on the underlying molecular mechanisms of phage resistance and the effect of antibiotics and human/animal immune system in phage infection. In addition to her academic work, Saija Kiljunen is a co-founder, board member and chief scientific advisor in PrecisionPhage Ltd. (Jyväskylä, Finland), a start-up company providing bacteriophage-based services.
